Abstract


Salutation is an important element of the language , sociolinguistics and pragmatics is the study of an important subject. Each language has its own specific salutation , these salutation is closely related to their respective cultural backgrounds , which can reveal the language salutation and the close relationship between social and cultural . And social factors and cultural values ??also deeply affect people for the selection and use of salutation . Therefore, studies of different cultures and social context salutation is extremely necessary. This study is based on a speech act , power and politeness theory with a peer cross-cultural comparative study . It three college campuses 120 Chinese students and 52 English -speaking students as subjects , two groups of students through questionnaires for teachers salutation similarities and differences by age , gender, and level of occasions as social variables statistical data , comparative analysis of the two cultures of different social factors on the choice of address forms different effects . Through statistical analysis of the data , combined with qualitative discussion , obtain the following findings : Chinese culture represents two groups of students salutation similarities exist ; affect their salutation selected social factors also vary in ritual and power is characterized by Chinese cultural values ??and individualism and equality as a symbol of American cultural values ??caused by these differences. This study is the first English- language teacher student groups to make specific investigation salutation , and further demonstrates the social and cultural factors in the language of the important impact of the use of politeness and effect . Findings of this study contribute to more effective cross- cultural communication , while teaching English and foreign language teaching teaching inspiration and reference value.
