Abstract


Exposition of politeness since ancient times , study and summarize the courtesy , however , only in recent decades . Accompanied by the birth of pragmatics , courtesy gradually become one of the major research topics of this discipline . More and more people aware of the need for politeness research , this is because we can not be isolated , have to pay attention to courtesy , to ensure smooth and effective interaction with people . On the other hand , the progress of science and technology gradually reduced temporal and spatial distance between people , the exchanges between people from different cultures and thus become more frequent and easy , courtesy also , in order to avoid unnecessary friction and conflict all the more urgent . Politeness theory of the biggest challenges is polite cultural universality and cultural specificity . Hold the point of view of the general theory scholars believe that to be able to find a universal theoretical system to explain the phenomenon of politeness in all cultures , particularity view scholars say that, because the culture is unique , so to explain the phenomenon of politeness theory culture difference varies . This paper argues that too much emphasis on the universality or particularity of courtesy will inevitably flow to be one-sided , should be aware of universality and particularity co-exist . English and Chinese on the politeness principle have much in common : but because of the different culture, beliefs and values ??, both cultural expression of polite time and each has its advantages . In this paper, a comparative study of English and Chinese Culture in the request , it is recommended , invitation and provide refused to speech acts , the phenomenon of politeness , both cultural universality , but also cultural specificity , English and Chinese refused strategy similarities, there are significant differences . English and Chinese culture in the Refusal special attention to the maintenance of the exchange of the two sides face , but the difference between two cultures, values, belief systems and determine the strategy adopted by the two cultures in the maintenance of face differ . Differences on such a deep-seated cultural differences caused by the phenomenon of politeness is the cross-cultural communication should be particularly attracted the attention of the Department .
