Abstract

Objective: The regeneration and repair of CNS (central nervous system) after injury is always the hotspot of the neural science field. Over the last few decades, a series of reports revealed that mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)could improve functional recovery after transplantation into animal models of neurological diseases, such as ischemic or degenerative diseases. Bone marrow derived MSCs(BM-MSCs) and human umbilical cord blood(HUCB) mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used to explore the regeneration, repair, and functional reestablishment of the spinal cord injury. Intraspinal transplantation of MSCs improves functional recovery after mechanic spinal cord injury. In particular, BM-MSCs could differentiate into neural cells in vivo and in vitro, and improve functional recovery. However, there are significant drops in cells number of BM-MSC and proliferating capacity with age. Taken together , it is of vital importance to find a new cell source to improve functional recovery of neurological diseases. Recently we found that human umbilical cord was a rich source of MSCs, which could be easily isolated, cultured and passaged in vitro. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem
