Abstract

Soil erosion, one of the several serious environmental problems, has haunted almost every corner of the world, and threatens human existence and social development. It attracts many people’s attention. Its formation pattern, intensity and successive process are closely related to land use/cover changes (LUCC). In 1993, International Geosphere and Biosphere Program (IGBP) and International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (HDP) listed LUCC research as the core study of global change. In china, the National Fund Committee has highlighted the soil erosion mechanism influenced by LUCC at the seminar of LUCC Process and Environmental Effect. The LUCC research and soil erosion mechanism study have drawn much attention of specialists and scholars nationwide.Yunnan is a mountainous province with high cliffs and deep valleys being seen in most places. The area of the mountain region accounts 94% of total. This study was carried out in a geological unit comprising the counties of Yangbi, Eryuan and Jianchuan in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. This unit epitomizes the landform of both plateau valleys and alpine valleys of the west and northwest region of the province. I do hope this study may offer some useful information for other researches on LUCC and soil erosion mechanism.By analyzing the Landsat data in 1990 and 2001of the study area, I ascertained the LUCC and soil erosion status with RS and GIS techniques and further determined the relation between LUCC and soil erosion. The results are:(1)The LUCC condition has changed obviously: ①The area of woodland and residential - industrial quarter increased 2791.71 and 1290.55 ha respectively, while the area of grassland reduced 4014.18 ha; ②The speed of the LUCC was relatively high and the overall dynamic land use rate was 0.77%; ③The index of the LUCC did not change too much - 215.037 in 1990 and 215.567 in 2001. The LUCC was still in developing status; ④the conversion among farmland, woodland and grassland was the most crucial one in various land use form conversions, followed by the conversion of farmland to residential - industrial quarter; ⑤It tended to be evident that the area of farmland and grassland was reducing, the area of woodland continued to increase with
