Abstract

During the modern information period, with the prevalence of computer and network in more and more industry, Network security was taken more serious. And IDS (Intrustion Detection System) has been become into an important technique in safety domain after decade’s development. With the rapid development of network technology and the corresponding attack- technology, the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) are facing new challenges. For the current Intrusion Detection System (IDS) has high false negative rate or high false alarm rate, the paper presents a monkey algorithm (MA) based approach to network intrusion detection. The monkey algorithm is an intelligent population- optimizing algorithm simulating monkey-climbing. With the MA’s global-search, rapidness and high accuracy rate, the model uses the MA to derive a set of classification rules from network data, KDD99 data set, and the support-confidence framework is utilized as fitness function to judge the quality of each rule. The generated rules are then used to detect or classify network intrusions in a real-time environment. The monkey algorithm based approach to network intrusion detection includes two modules, one is training stage, generate a set of classification rules from network data, the other is detect stage, using the generated rules to detect or classify network intrusions in a real-time environment. Experimental results show that the MA-based approach can significantly improve the quality and the speed of generating rules, so that it can improve the performance of IDS.
