Abstract


There is no any other country in the world today that has urbanized as rapid as China has since the reform and opening of China. Urban spatial environment in China has being changed greatly at a surprising speed. In face of such extensive, high-speed changes and developments of cities, we need to know the principle of urban development in a more rational and specific way, in order to guide the healthy development of China’s urban construction. Modern urban design has gone through over 20 years in China since the 1980s. Although tremendous achievements have been made on the theory and practice of urban design, there are also experience and lessons need to be drawn on reasonably and clearly. From the angle of the categories of modern urban design practice, the dissertation summarizes the development of modern urban design practice in China. Beginning with classifying the modern urban design practice in China over the past 20 years, the dissertation compares it with that in the western countries of the same period, discusses the relevant background factors that influence the development of the category of urban design practice, and then points out the deficiency in our country. Finally, the dissertation makes an anticipation of the future of China’s modern urban design practice and puts forward that the category of modern urban design practice in China will first turns from “the project -products type”into “the policy -course type ”in the near future, and then further into “synthesis-management type”in the far future. Correspondingly, the value orientation, the control system and the expression form of outputs will be perfected further.
