Abstract


The family education in the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties was a kind of activity infamily life which happened among the family members to purposefully and consciouslyenhance person’s skills of knowledge, to work on the moral character and to develop person’sintelligence and physical strength. Parents or other seniors played an important role in theeducation to their descendants. Family education was highly valued in Western and EasternHan Dynasties. There were all kinds of the family education in the Han Dynasties. Thecontent of education was rich. There are many ways in the family education, for example, theedification of the family environment, the model of the senior, the influence of good examples.The tutors combined the chance and the material thing and used them in the education. Therewere also rude educational methods, including the tongue-lashing and the physicalpunishment, and so on.The family education was subjected to the dual influence of the internal factors of thefamily and the social development. Family structure, family relation and family culturedirectly influenced the implementation and the result of the family education in HanDynasties. The trend of the society of the Han Dynasties guided the direction of itseducational development. The family education in the Han Dynasties had its outstandingcharacteristics of its ages’ influence and limits.The family education in the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties, with absorbing in theexperience in the past, had a further development, established the foundation for 1000 years’traditional Chinese education and marked out the frame for the traditional education of China.The family education was the original version of the traditional Chinese social familyeducation and had profound cultural influence.
