Abstract


This paper mainly analyses U.S. political and economic impacts in the process ofindustrialization and urbanization at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and it alsodiscusses the changes of the social structure during that period, as well as the reason andinfluence of those changes.The foreword introduces the situation of current research about the White-collar,summarizes briefly the relevant researches of foreign academic communities, introduces theresearch approach and goal of this paper, defines and explains some main concepts.Part one introduces the concept, the rise and the characteristics of the white-collar, andexplains the relationships between the white-collar and middle class.Part two analyses the reasons for the formation of the white-collar. It is mainly tracingthe origin from the following aspects: economy, education, immigrantion, industrial structureand government functions etc.;among them, the economic reason is the main factor;otheraspects are all direct or indirectly under its influences. All these reasons promoted and exertedinfluence on each other, contributed to the rise of the white-collar.Part three describes the life style, social participation of the white-collar, which arefollowed by the analysis of the influences. The characteristics of the white-collar decide theirlife style and the function in the society. Homogeneous neighborhood of suburban communitylife and the nuclear family life mode become one of the main symbols of white-collar. As themiddle stratum, they influenced the economy, politics and society etc.The conclusion summarizes briefly the whole paper, and puts forward with some viewson the white-collar: first, white-collar as the mental working group serves the function inpromoting American economic development, since their emergence makes the United Statesthe strongest country in the world after the First World War. Second, as the middle class, theyperformed the function of coordination relating the bourgeoisie with proletariat, removingunsteady factors in the society. Third, the employing characteristics of the white-collar makethem pursue value of education rather than property thus launched a kind of study-orientedspirits in the United States.
