Abstract


With the further enhancement of China’s economy strength and the accelerated pace of entering into the economic integration, China’s foreign direct investment has appeared a trend of faster growth, and formed a certain scale. Chinese enterprises’direct investment in the ASEAN region also showed a trend of rapid growth.From the previous studies, we can see that there is a close connection between a country’s foreign direct investment and foreign trade, which expresses a complementary or an alternative relationship. This paper analyzes the issue through applying comprehensively the integration of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis combining theoretical analysis and empirical testing and the integration of International Trade, International Investment and other relevant theoretical knowledge. On the basis of various views and theoretical papers about the trade effects of international direct investment at home and abroad, we comparatively analyze the current situation of our country’s direct investment and trade in ASEAN, and then based on panel data, using econometric analysis to analyze the export and import trade effects of our country’s direct investment in ASEAN in 2001-2008.From the empirical results we can derive that our country’s direct investment in ASEAN can promote our country’s export and import trade with ASEAN. However, this complementary effect is significantly small, which is mainly due to the relatively low scale of China’s OFDI in ASEAN compared with the scale of our country’s trade in ASEAN. The empirical results also show that the fixed effect of our country’s direct investment on the export and import trade in ASEAN is different in every country. The difference is related to the economic development situation, political, economic and cultural environment, the present situation of attracting foreign direct investment of ASEAN as well as China’s trade situation with ASEAN. According to this conclusion, combining with the constraints analysis, this paper put forward the countermeasures in respect of both the government and enterprises to promote better development of direct investment and trade in ASEAN.
