Introduction Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an increasingly recognized condition that may progress to end-stage liver disease. The pathological picture resembles that of alcohol-induced liver injury, but it occurs in patients who do not abuse alcohol. It refers to a wide spectrum of liver damage, ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, advanced fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) represents only a stage within the spectrum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. NASH is a potentially aggressive variant that could evolve to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, though it forms about 2-3 percent of the NAFLD but it is an important variant of the disease due to its progressive nature and fatal outcome. In primary NASH there is underlying insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia, all of which are also features of the metabolic syndrome. Up to 75 percent of people with NASH have diabetes mellitus. Though analysis of liver biopsy specimens is the cornerstone of diagnosis, clinical indicators in NAFLD patients that predict the likelihood of diagnosis of the aggressive NASH subset are: BMI > 30, type 2 diabetes mellitus, age > 45 years and an AST: ALT ratio > 1.The purpose of the research is to estimate the prevalence of NAFLD in diabetic inpatients and analyze the risk factors associated with the disease. We also tried to centralize the cluster of manifestations and biochemical indices that could be used to identify those with steatosis who would advance to NASH.Subjects and Methods1.
