Building project puts tremendous burden on the environment during the life cycle, including the stages of construction, operation and demoliation, comsuming large quantities of resources and energy. Currently, sustainable development becomes a basic national policy in China. In this context, reducing the environmental impacts of building project is becoming an inevitalbe task. However, a building project is quite a complicated system and how to assess the appropriation of ecological productive land of a building project quantitatively and objectively is an important subject at present. The ecological footprint method measures the human’s use of natural capital, namely the demand of natural resources. Ecological footprint analysis (EFA) can translate resources and energy consumption of building project into the amount of ecological productive land required to produce these resources, reflecting the environmental impact of building project objectively. Application on building project of EFA has been carried out abroad to some extent, mainly on the lays of region, industry and product. Based on the theory of EFA, a quantitative assessment model is developed to assess the building life cycle environmental impact by translating the impact into area of the ecological productive land.Based on the theory of carbon cycle, the study corrects the definition of fossil energy land. Both forest and pasture are taken into account to calculate ability of carbon sequestration of the fossil energy land area required to absorb 1 ton CO2 and points out the energy land appropriation of unit common fossil fuel. Afterwards, as represented by heat power and hydro-electric power, the research calculates the ecological footprint to produce 1kwh of electricity, laying the foundation to assess the environmental impacts of electricity comsumption in the stages of building construction and operation. The model is applied to two‘the future house’demonstration projects in Beijing. The study computes the ecological footprint of kinds of unit materials with the life cycle environmental impact lists and the embodied energy data of these materials. Environmental impact of stages of embodiment, operation and demolition are all included in the study. Finally, the research compares the unit ecological footprint between the Chinese building and the American building, analyzing the applicability and conditions of the method.
