Objective: Nosocomial infection is a common disorder as well as the diarrhea is one of the most common nosocomial infections in neonates. This article probes into the incidence and relating factors for nosocomial diarrhea in neonates and assess the availability of the microecological pharmaceutics(Bifico, oral capsules of live combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Enterococcus) in prevention of nosocomial diarrhea in neonates who were treated in hospital over 3 days. Method: A retrospective study was conducted among all (826 cases) hospitalized neonates in the department of neonates of Quanzhou Children Hospital from June 2004 to October 2005 in Quanzhou city. With all patients with nosocomial diarrhea as cases and all patients without nosocomial diarrhea as controls, a case-control study on relating factors for nosocomial diarrhea and assess the efficacy of the microecological pharmaceutics in prevention of nosocomial diarrhea in neonates was carried out. Available data were analyzed by one-way Chi-square test and unconditional logistic multiple regression model. Result: 97 cases of nosocomial diarrhea were identified among 826 cases neonates with an incidence of 11.74%(97/826). The morbidity was 7.32%(30/410) in case group treated with the use "of Bifico; and 16.10%(67/416) in the control group treated without Bifico. The difference of the morbidity between the two groups was of an obvious significance (X~2=l5.389, p=0.000). The one-way Chi-square test of paired data showed that nosocomial diarrhea was significantly associated with premature infant, placement of incubator, inventive operation, feeding method, abenteric intravenous feeding, intestinal feeding after birth, application of antibiotics before admission, way of using antibiotics, application of glucocorticoid hormone, whether to use the preventive microecological pharmaceutics, intracranial hemorrhage; and grouped data showed that nosocomial diarrhea was significantly associated with days of hospitalization, age of the sick child during hospitalization, the weight
