The intervertebral disc is responsible for the attachment of vertebral bodies to each other, providing flexibility and absorbing and distributing the loads applied to the spinal column. With aging, the disc undergoes significant changes in volume and shape as well as in biochemical composition and biomechanical properties. Lumbar disc herniations are believed to result from anular degeneration that leads to a weakening of the anulus fibrosus, leaving the disc susceptible to anular fissuring and tearing.Many patients with back pain, leg pain, or weakness of the lower extremity muscles are diagnosed with a herniated disc, or rupture of the intervertebral disc of the spine. Recently research shows the reason for lumbar disc herniations is: 1. Biochemical composition and quantity of the lumbar disc influence it’s structure and stabilization. 2. Collagense in pathological changes part is abnormal. 3. the activity of phospholipase A2 in the lumbar disc is abnomal and cause pain.Collagense for injection is for the treatment of lumbar disc herniations in clinic. Collagenases, enzymes that break down the native collagen that holds animal tissues together, The most potent collagenase is the crude collagenase secreted by the anaerobic bacteria Clostridium histolyticum.
