Abstract


Reforms and development of higher education are to some extent subject to thoughts and theories of higher education. Knowledge-based Economy is still a term used to describe and explain certain phenomena over recent years, but not a strict economic definition. The thoughts and theories of Knowledge-based Economy still need to be tested by further development in economy and Economics. However, as an often-referred term, Knowledge-based Economy is more influential than most economic definitions, and it triggered thoughts of Higher Education from many aspects.As a whole and from the aspects of development of thoughts and theories of Knowledge-based Economy in Economics and Sociology and the evolution of higher education ideas, this essay trails back the development of thoughts and theories of Knowledge-based Economy and higher education since the germination of Knowledge-based Economy, combs those major thoughts and theories of higher education conceptions, position, functions, system evolutions, management and reforms, and comments on the achievements and defects of those thoughts and theories. On the basis of the overview of those thoughts and theories, the essay gives several suggestions for China’s higher education development.The essay divides the development of thoughts and theories of Knowledge-based Economy and Higher Education into two stages: the Emergence of thoughts and theories of Knowledge-based Economy and Higher Education: from 1960’to the middle of 1990’, and the development of Knowledge-based Economy and Higher Education: from the middle of 1990’up to now.The essay first overviews the origination of Knowledge-based Economy thoughts in Economics, the germination of Knowledge-based Economy thoughts in Sociology, and discussions concerning higher education inspired by Knowledge-based Economy thoughts and theories, such as the functions, position of higher education, the relationship between universities, governments and industries, the management of multiversities, the debate concerning the education of undergraduates and autonomy of universities before the middle of 1990’, especially between 1960’and the middle of
