Abstract


Different thought patterns and different worldviews are the direct result of different languages. Learning a new language means not only mastering of communication tools and studying techniques but also transformation from one thinking habit to another. As language use reflects the choice and creation of thought, the process of translation, therefore, is a switchover of both language form and thought pattern. Without considering the different thought patterns, the translator might find his translation undesirable, either in keeping the spirit of the original, or in providing a smooth text for readers of the target language.A discourse gives us a greater space than sentence條inguistic context. With the help of context, it is much more flexible for the translator to recreate the spirit of the original text in the target language. This is the very reason why the study of discourse has been paid more and more attention in recent years.It is well known that great importance has been attached to the factors that can affect the quality of translation, including context, register and style etc. But, the effect resulting from different ways of thinking has been neglected for a long time. Under the condition of cross-culture being studied in fiill swing, as a major part of cross-culture, the study of different ways of thinking between English and Chinese should not have been so much backward.Different ways of thinking between English and Chinese is a subject that has been studied by many experts. What is new in my dissertation is that it has analyzed different ways of thinking in a theoretical way. That is, apart from systematical collections of its specific difference in language use, an overall analysis is undertaken. Besides, after making a regularized summery, practical advises and ways to solve this problem have been promoted.My conclusion is that there are no fixed patterns or formulas for translation. But by analyzing the source text and the target one from the angle of different ways of thinking, the translator might find a more satisfactory version which keeps as much of the contents and style of the original as possible and at the same time can easily be accepted by readers of another language and culture.
