Abstract

Engineering structures are usually characterized with enormous size and mass, multiple construction materials, multiple structural types, the structural damages are also diversified. When we carry out health diagnosis of human bodies, we can derive a health baseline by statistical method, but we can not get such a baseline by the same way. That is why structural damages are so difficult and challengeable. After illustration of the development on structural damage detection, a new method for structural damage diagnosis which combines static and dynamic structural signals was proposed, the validation of this new method was verified by field test. This paper can be summarized as follow:1. A long span truss roof in a hotel was tested by static loading method. The loading deflection curves of six pieces of truss with identical design drawings were obtained, the influences on the deformation behavior of construction quality and boundary conditions were investigated.2. The dynamic behavior of the above six pieces of truss was studied by mode measurement, the relationship between static and dynamic behavior is obtained by comparison. It is relatively easy to get the dynamic behavior; the static behavior can be extrapolated from dynamic behavior by this relationship.3. Based on prototype and model test result, it can be concluded that by comparing dynamic behavior of structural units with identical design parameters (such as some pieces of same truss), that or those units with potential damages can be identified globally. By applying Symmetrical Signal Method (SSM) to units with potential damages, the damage location can be determined.
