In view of the present plant landscape design research, which pays more attention to the plants’ornamental function, but neglects the plants’ construction function, this paper attempts to introduce the plant space concept to plant landscape design, interprets the plant as "building" the spatial material, treats the plant in a kind of neutral horizon, and thinks of all plants being landscape resources in application.Through generalized analysis on domestic and foreign plant space research progress, and referring to related subjects references and on-the-spot investigation, this article systematically analyzes the plant space characteristic, namely, plant’s size, the shape, the sense of texture, the color, the change of season appearance and so on, which have different influence in degrees on constructing the plant space.At the sight of the plant space characteristics, we can analyze the selection of plant material.’By analyzing different types of plant space, we can summary the atmosphere of different types of space and the required spatial components, and explore different types of plant material requirements according to different plants, different spatial characteristics.This article proposes the three-dimensional cube space; therefore, it makes certain probes in the three-dimensional characteristic quantity relation in this article.One is proposing design in certain quantities, through the psychology and human behavior which expands the spatial feeling and the behavior data, coming from the concrete plant space design;To determine the spatial vertical width, height and length, through the height of sight and the scope of angle; to determine the space types of each composite tree, through the relationship between individual tree height and planting distance of each tree.The another is instructing the design of each constitution surface, integrating the density, coverage and other value concepts in plant community which are applied in the spatial design, thus to carry on the concrete quantification the space to build.To determine the planting distance of vertical surface and number, by analyzing the relative density of plant space; to determine whether forming space coverage, by analyzing the relative coverage of plant space.There divides plant space combination form into two kinds in this article with the introduction of the study of space composition in architecture; one is striving for unification by the spool thread, and the other is striving for integration with the terrain. Although the research of the plant space is from the function, because of the deep meanings in our country’s traditional culture on plant, we can make each plant space to build various kind of ideal condition. This article also makes some sample analysis on each kind of ideal condition.Through the plant community investigation method to the each kind of plant space of path greening land in Changsha, this paper draws plane graphs and the profile pictures. Meanwhile, it attempts to explain the problem how plant to build space.
