Abstract


With the pace of world speeding up, traffic issue and pollution issue are more and more obvious in big cities and Bus Rapid Transit System has already become a best solution for public transportation. , Bus Rapid Transit System, BRT for abbreviation , is regarded as a quick public transport service including dedicated roads, new type city bus vehicles and advanced IT technologies, in which specific lanes and particular stations for the fast passenger flow transportation of large city operation roads may be established, which is somewhat like railway transportation system. This new model combines the special operational and rapid properties of railway transportation, while maintaining the managerial flexibility and economy of traditional public transportation.This thesis is finished by reading abundant materials as traffic policy and industry standard, etc from local and overseas government and industry association, and meanwhile, this thesis is applied investigation as well for operation status of current BRT system, which based on the rule of systematical and complete and scientific.In this thesis, emerging, development, configuration, characteristic and advantages of BRT system are described in some details. The BRT system are composed of five main basic facilities, specific lanes, bus stations, well equipped vehicle, intelligent information system, and operation service. Emphasis of this thesis is focused on the evaluation index of vehicle system and the relationship and linkage between the BRT and other systems are studied by demonstration of the successful operation experiences in the BRT example cities.The conclusion is that BRT is a kind of system with sustainable development and wide application. Different BRT requirements enable types of quality vehicles to be more variant, vice versa, variant option of vehicle depends on variant BRT requirements.Shanghai is accelerating its progress toward developing world leadership in city development. The proposal is for the urgent establishment of BRT system. This thesis proposes a feasible solution for vehicle option which matches Shanghai’s future transport efficiency that is suitable for a large urban high density city of its scale.Main purpose of this thesis is to offer theoretical references for the transportation operators to choose types of bus option and for the vehicles manufacturers to develop suitable and efficient bus products.
