Abstract

Periodontitis is defined as the loss of tooth support resulting from a microbial challenge in the region surrounding the teeth. An important goal of periodontal therapy is to regenerate periodontal attachment on a root surface previously affected by periodontitis. In the past few years, increasing attention has been paid to creating multifunctional biomaterials. The implants made of these materials have a combination of several functions within the same device. For example, the antibiotic releasing properties together with self-reinforcing are recently a matter of great interest. These promising results led us to study UPPE/β-TCP composite further as a potential material for alveolar replacement applications as a controlled delivery system of tetracycline.First of all, this study compared the powder calcination temperature on the impact phase. It was found that high-purityβ-TCP could be got after calcined temperature 800℃and above. Meanwhile, the lower temperature calcined temperature was used, the smaller particle ofβ-TCP powder would be got. Performance of the drug study found that,β-TCP powder to the carrying capacity of tetracycline drugs depended largely on the characteristics of powder specific surface area, which is manifested as physical adsorption, but also the existence of mechanisms of chemical sequestration. At the same time, it was found tetracycline could promoteβ-TCP transferred to hydroxyapatite in the solution.Secondly, it was study that the synthesis ofβ-TCP material of the degradation of the performance of innovative research. The calcium ion release in solution was used to evaluate the degradation of composite material, and the study showed thatβ-TCP material in the neutral or alkaline (pH = 7.0 ~ 7.4) solution environment, the degradation of the release of calcium ions was slow and the phase was stable; and in acidic environment (pH = 6.0 ~ 6.2) of the solution environment, the release of calcium ions was rather rapid and hydroxyapatite were formed apparently inβ-TCP. In addition, the studies, onβ-TCP/UPPE composite materials and their components materials in cell culture experiments, showed that the cell survival rates were rather high and the cell could anchor and reproduce on the surface. So, that was to say, these materials had better biological-security. Meanwhile, the bone repairment experiment revealed that the composite materialβ-TCP/UPPE was of good plastic ability, and bone tissue could be closely combined to the composite materials. The new bone tissue could cling to material to grow.Above all, the local application of injectable UPPE/β-TCP composites appears to be promising in the context of periodontal treatment.
