Abstract


Haruki Murakami is one of Japan’s comparatively influential literary writers. In 2002, the first publication of the novel Kafka on the Shore caused a huge sensation and also a major controversy among the readers, but it once again established the writer’s position in the Japanese postwar literary field.This paper takes Kafka on the Shore as the center to analyze Murakami’s major male characters from the perspectives of the influence western literature has on the author and the contemporary social background. The analysis of the main male images, juvenile Kafka and Naka Da, reveals a prevalent spiritual crisis in the contemporary Japanese society and the missing sense of responsibility in the post-modern context under the background of the changes of social structure and the integration of eastern and western culture. Combined with other male images in his novels, Haruki Murakami takes a new perspective to elaborate the changes of male sense of responsibility and its social significance in the contemporary Japanese society in this novel.
