Abstract

The Imperial Examination System of TANG Dynasty had the function of healing the society. The saying came from subjects which were advanced by the king in the examinations. It revealed that the ultimate aim of the Imperial Examination System was patching up the current . issues, benefiting the society and advancing the development of the society. Therefore, the country established some set subjects such as Mingjing, Jingshi and so on and selected civilian officers who greatly mastered Confucius classics , rules, regulations, and knowledge about the history and were capability of writing officers who were familiar with the techniques of fighting and some specialists who mastered the law, lexicology, math and so on by means of these set subjects. At the same time, the country also established some temporary subjects. That is to say that the emperor established some subjects for selected practical pillars of the society in light of the need of the real demands.The content of the examination concerned a lot of current issues which were connected with politics, economy, fighting, national relation, culture, society and so on. Candidates can criticize current issues frankly and advanced the proposals. In order to build up the possibility of passing some candidates do imitative exercises privately by writing the theses about current issues. It in fact made all men of letters of the society into the core of the politics. The country organized and appointed them to study political issues .discover questions and resolve questions so as to strengthen the country’ abilities of patching up crises of the society. These elites got the membership of politic not by identification of the country but by taking part in the examination. As a result, their initiative was built up remarkably and the society was filled with vigor.The emperor always said that he was no of good morality and outstanding ability. There were many mistakes in the politic so as to the country were in the danger. So he asked for candidates to help and guide him. The authority did not define standard answers of examinations and let candidates think and write freely. The bravery effacing the reality straightly and the attitude of collected and accepted proposals were the symbol of the self-esteem and self-confidence of TANG Dynasty. TANG Dynasty was in the booming period of feudal society and not of the worry about the extinction of country, nationality and religion in the end of the feudal society. From the early period of TANG Dynasty Emperor-Tai and his party established the rule of advancing and accepting proposals positively, many people had recognized that the concert and similarity was not the luck of the country.Under the historical background, the function of healing the society of the Imperial Examination System showed up. However, the most serious problems of the feudal society were the land problem and sharp class contradiction problem. Although the Imperial Examination System held by rulers disclosed some apparent problems of the society, it was not able to resolve the regular problem. In addition, the cruel and complicate combats among different politic parties were responsible for the function of healing the society of the system was limited and can not changed the extinct fate of TANG Dynasty.
