Abstract


Eileen Chang,“a painter of beautiful women in west-infected metropolis society”, is such a writer being also important to the 20th century clothing history of China. Her enthusiasm and complex on clothing is mediated by many novel characters as well as her personal preference in real life. This talent is made best use of in literary works, where a magnificent artistic universe is figured by clothing classics and colors. Eileen’s favor of clothing style is fanatical and persistent. During a life time, her self-reliance and peculiar taste on clothes was well-known to the entire cultural field of Shanghai. The clothes of her novel characters are always ever-changing in style, subtle in detail, vivid in color, and plenty in depth. To study the clothing across Eileen Chang’s novels is a fancy and pleasant experience. Brilliant and elegant clothes not only bring visual enjoyment but more importantly encourage the exploration to the inner spirit of literature. Eileen’s successful depiction on clothing and clothes was due to her rich knowledge on Chinese traditional history and culture. Under the transitional social circumstances of the period of Republic of China, the clothing style in Eileen’s novel are mixed with both historical and cultural elements. While in-kind attention by other writers remains very rare, the clothing had exhibited unprecedented power with Eileen’s characterization. Her work, therefore, becomes a very special prospect in modern literature. This study looks into the clothing of Eileen Chang’s novel characters in a given social background, analyzes the means of depiction on clothes, discusses the association of clothes depiction to entire storyline, and seeks to reveal the culture deposits incorporated with clothing.
