Abstract


This paper summarizes the phonic characteristics of Nanlu Pinghua, a dialect spoken in the southern part of Ningyuan County in Hunan province. All information was collected through field-researching the Ningyuan geographies, populations and face-to-face interviewing the local people who speak Nanlu Pinghua. The paper also compares the Nanlu Pinghua vs. Pinghua spoken by people in the east, west and north regions of Ningyuan County- Donglu Pinghua, Xilu Pinghua and Beilu Pinghua. The first-hand information about Nanlu Pinghua included in this paper can be a valuable foundation and useful reference to future studies on Pinghua, a dialect spoken across the whole Ningyuan County.The paper is divided into seven chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction. It gives an overview of Ningyuan County’s geographical characteristics, population, histories and its language families. It also provides an overview of the Nanlu Pinghua, its phonic structures, usage coverage and the importance of studying.Chapter 2 describes the details of Nanlu Pinghua’s phonological system including the consonant, vowel and tone systems.Chapter 3 explains the collocation relationship of Nanlu Pinghua and collocation characters of its consonants, vowels and tones.Chapter 4 studies the Nanlu Pinghua’s variant pronunciation in literary reading and colloquial reading base on its consonants, vowels and tones characteristics.Chapter 5 summarizes the homonym forms of Nanlu Pinghua.Chapter 6 compares the mid-ancient sound in Nanlu Pinghua phonological system, and compares the Nanlu Pinghua vs the Pinghua spoken in the east, west and north regions of Ningyuan County-Donglu Pinghua, Xilu Pinghua and Beilu Pinghua.Chapter 7 is the summary and conclusion. Nanlu Pinghua has more relation with Gan dialect.
