Abstract


The regional sustainable development has become the key field of the sustainable development research, and the eternal subject of the regional sustainable development is to quantitative estimate the ecosystem within its capacities or not,and to realize the coordination between“the ecology”and“the economy”. The ecological footprint (EF) model is a new aggregative indicator which proposed to assess the utilization degree of the nature by M.Wackernagel, etc. This method can provide new idea to assess the regional development.This paper introduces the concept of ecological footprint, the calculational method, the calculational model and the research progress on present domestic and foreign,and take the Xinjiang Turpan area as an example,calculate the ecological footprint of Turpan area from 1966~2005. The result shows that, Turpan’s ecological footprint is on ecological deficit condition continuously, and the ecological deficit is going up year after year, this indicates that, Turpan area’s development is unsustainable. This paper analyses and discusses the reason which forms on the Turpan area ecological deficit, proposes policies about how to reduce the ecological deficit, hope to provide the scientific basis and the policy instruction for Turpan area.The final part of paper proposes the improved suggestions to some questions which exists in the regional sustainable development appraisal research, and has carried on confirmation showing take the Turpan area as an example. It provides the new mentality for the ecological footprint in the regional sustainable development research.
