Abstract


Ultrafine Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) is not only a high added-value product, but also a high quality and environment friendly filler.Developing simple and highly effective grinding technology, and controling theparticle size and shape are the keys to obtain the high quality ultrafine GCC andimprove the economic efficiency of ultrafine GCC industry.The grinding efficiency of planetary ball mill is higher than other grindingequipments. Based on the study of ultrafine grinding kinetics characteristics andgrinding technology of GCC, the simplified BS model was successfully appliedto analysis the wet ultrafine grinding kinetics of GCC by planetary ball mill.The experimental results show that the kinetical equation of the process can bededucted as: R(x,t)= R(x,0)exp[-(9.0501 Kx2.7640t)0.3779].The relationbetween grinding parameters and K can be espressed as follows: K=-0.16643-0.009231n p1-1.4036p2+3.5811p22-2.94292p23-0.34595p3+0.95953p32-0.71562p32+0.062771n p4K (grinding rate constant), P1 (zirconia’s balls diameter), p2 (zirconia’sballs stuffing rate), p3 (slurry concentration) and p4 (ball mill’s rotationalspeed) are grinding parameters. Based on the kinetics study, the grinding rate constant was used toinvestigate the effect of process conditions on size distribution. The kineticsfunction drawn from this study can be used to simulate and predicate the sizedistributions of GCC and explain the mechanism of the ultrafine grindingprocess.In this research, a BS model coupling grinding parameters has beenproposed to describle the wet grinding kinetics of GCC in planetary mill. Theresearch provided here can be considered as the base for optimizing the grindingprocesses to control the diameter of GCC product.
