Abstract


From 1950s, fantasy literature had become one of the most popular genres all over the world. Yet, academic studies on fantasy literature and fantasy writers in China are not so prosperous and even in a way it is only the beginning of this discipline. This paper takes the Chronicles of Narnia written by English famous fantasy novelist, Clive Staples Lewis, as the study objective. Simultaneously, this paper is intended to offer a critical perspective upon the characters and plots using theories of influence studies, image studies and so on. The whole paper presents the heritage and re-creation of the Chronicles of Narnia, the inherence between the novel and the Bible, the setting of themes and motifs etc. All the analysis leads to the hidden meaning of the metaphors and author’s ultimate sense and humane thoughts. At the same time, however, this paper also criticizes the stubborn Christian theology rooted in Lewis’mind, which prejudices the neutrality of the series.Studies on the fantasy novel, the Chronicles of Narnia, are not only benefits on helping us to comprehend the fluctuating about literature trend of thought but also intensify the understanding of literature history of twenty century. Additionally, this paper is offering fantasy fans a new perspective to upgrade their corresponding reading and writing skills. Equally, since the Chronicles of Narnia containing a great deal of Christian and ethical factors this paper is an experiment of interdisciplinary study between literature and religious philosophy.
