Multimedia applications within the campus network is deepening, while the traditional areas of multimedia network applications network include the video on demand, live, and e-learning which based on network. In recent years, with the development of campus IP surveillance technology, a web-based campus monitoring digital media applications has been a new area. The main characteristics of multimedia applications on campus is a large video stream, and increasing demand for bandwidth, which makes the construction and planning of campus network to carry out integrated with multimedia applications. On the one hand, it is to design the physical bandwidth of the campus network rationally; on the other hand, it is to make full use of multicast technology to reduce traffic pressure on the entire network, which can carry more network applications.Campus network is a kind of medium-sized Campus Network which generally applying Gigabit or 10 Gigabit as it’s backbone link, however, some schools still have problems as the bandwidth is insufficient to meet the requirements of multimedia applications and related server overload. At this stage, the key of campus multimedia applications is how to plan and design the campus network environment. At the present stage, the problems of campus network multimedia application are:the concentration of traffic by a large number of concurrent users, the traffic demand of the campus network digital monitoring system, and the requirement of digital learning network, which are the main problems in the process of multimedia applications for the universities.This article focuses on how to design and establish an efficient, scalable, and common campus network multimedia applications from the perspective of network traffic management system. First of all, the article studied the demand characteristics of multimedia applications within campus network from multiple perspectives. It has made necessary expositions on the requirements for different multimedia applications from its own characteristics of the campus network. Choosing Hefei University campus network as the prototype, this paper has put forward the ideas of applications design and implementation of the same campus multimedia, relying on multicast-based and the exchange network.Thereinto, it focuses on multicast technology, the current mainstream digital teaching and monitoring system for the network environment needs, besides, it has completed the design of network infrastructure for multimedia applications of Hefei University, and the planning and deployment of related systems. Furthermore, it has offered some analysis on the insufficiency of the construction process of early video surveillance system, and made some relevant improvements, which will guide for the future design and deployment of multimedia applications provide guidance of our University.The innovations of this article are the construction planning and design ideas of campus multimedia applications, the rational application of multicast technology, the full digital of monitoring system, the dual stream technology design and so on.
