An investigation was conducted over 150 Tieguanyin tea plantations in south Fujian province in order to understand the supply capability of nitrogen and potassium of the tea plantation soils. Some field experiments were also carried out in three selected Tieguanyin tea plantations to verify the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. The main results were as follows:1.The mean total and hydrolazable nitrogen of the tea plantation surface soils (0-20 cm)were 0.79 g·kg-1and 95.56 mg·kg-1,respectively.According to the environmental requirement for growing area of tea(NY/T 853-2004),the total N was at low level while the hydrolazable N was at higher level. There was a significant correlation between the total N and the hydrolazable N.Both the total and hydrolazable N were significantly correlated with the organic matter contents and CEC.The tea plantation soils derived from different parent soils contained different total and hydrolazable N and decreased in the order of:rice soil>yellow soils>red soils>yellowish red soils>lateritic red soils.Generally, clayey soils contained more nitrogen than sandy soils.2.The mean total, exchangeable and slowly available potassium of the tea plantation surface soils were 12.45 g·kg-1,77.34 mg·kg-1and 114.09 mg·kg-1, respectively.According to the environmental requirement for growing area of tea (NY/T 853-2004),the total K was at middle to high level while the exchangeable K was at lower level. The CEC showed a significant correlation with the total K.The tea plantation soils derived from different parent soils contained different total, slowly available and exchangeable K.The total and slowly available K decreased in the following order:rice soil>yellowish red soil>red soils>yellow soils>lateritic red soils. The exchangeable K decreased in the order of:red soils>yellowish red soil>rice soil>yellow soils>lateritic red soils.3.The N concentrations in the tender tea leaves were between 8.1 and 141.8 g·kg-1, with an average of 23.7 g·kg-1.The K concentrations of the tender tea leaves were 0.74-12.23 g·kg-1,with an average of 8.71 g·kg-1.Both the concentrations of N and K were higher in tender leaves than the other parts. With the age of tea trees, the concentrations of N and K in the roots increased.4.During the indoor soil incubation, the hydrolazable N was significantly increased by applying urea and reached the maxum in the fifth day of incubation. The higher hydrolazable N level was kept until the 40th day.The NO3- concentration was also increased by applying urea. The application of organic manure increased the NO3-concentration with a smaller degree than urea. The exchangeable K reached the peak value in the 25thday of incubation after the application of potassium sulphate.5.The application of organic manure increased the contents of hydrolazable N, NO3-,exchangeable K and slowly available K.The hyrrolazable N of the surface soil was increased by applying urea while the NO3- did not changed apparently by fertilization. The exhangeable K was increased by the application the potassium sulfate..6.According to the field experiment, the optomam rates of N and K fertilizers for Tieguanyin tea plantation were 15-20 kg N/ hm2·y and 7.5-11.5 kg K2O/ hm2·y, respectively.
