Abstract


Chinese translation activity begins with the Sutra Translation which begins at the end of Donghan Dynasty and ends in Tang and Song Dynasty, and experienced Technology Translation which begins at the end of Ming Dynasty and ends at beginning of Qing Dynasty, Western-Science Translation which begins at the end of Qing Dynasty and ends at the beginning of early Republic of China. The translation between Opium Wars is the beginning of the third translation wave. In 1840, imperialists opened China with guns and cannons, then various cultural tides settled in. at the same time some clerisies searched for truth in order to save our country, thus translation enterprise of modern history came into being.The thesis consists of four parts:Chapter one: studies the social and historical conditions for English Translation between Opium Wars. Mainly dates back to the communications between China and other countries before Opium Wars, the ideas for English Translation between Opium Wars and the English Translation survey before Opium Wars.Chapter two: discusses the English Translation of Missionary during Opium Wars. Which is made up of the activities in Hong Kong、Ningbo、Shanghai and Guangzhou. The books they translated involves Natural Science, such as Math and Physics, Medical Science. More importantly, they set up two publishing and printing agencies, which published and printed most of their works, as well as some collections of yearbooks and dictionaries.Chapter three: introduces the English Translation of Chinese people during Opium Wars. It contains the English Translation of reformists of the landlord class and Lin Zexu’s separately. Chinese English Translation is the beginning of the third translation wave. Influenced by Mr. Lin, more translators and works were produced. Which introduced the western science on Natural Science、Industry and Agriculture、Education、Social Science and so on.Chapter four: expounds the impacts of English Translation during Opium Wars. It promoted the development of Chinese English Translation and the coming of Yangwu movements, speeded the modernization of China. It laid the groundwork for the English translation of the later Yangwu movements、Wuxu Reforming、Xinhai Revolution a d New-Culture Movements.As the beginning of the third translation wave, the English Translation during Opium Wars was carried out in special backgrounds, and cumbered with the tasks of strengthening our country. It has positive effects on input civilization、the enlightenment of thinking、political propaganda and invigorate China.
