Abstract

Can Xue, as one of the influential writers in China’s modern literature realm, tends to form her unique writing style and spiritual temperament with a tinge of mysticism through the means of absurd visual sentiments, bizarre human behaviors and obscure language, which makes it difficult to interpret her works. So far, there have never been any researches on Can Xue. Thus the author, in a tentative attitude, excerpts the childhood sentiments from Can Xue’s novels as the basis of this thesis creation in order to explore her works’unparalleled artistic glamour and analyze its meanings and values from this perspective. Art is the reflection of life, so the writer’s creation is inevitably subject to his own growing experiences. Though Can Xue’s writing style is often commented as absurdness and mysticism, I find, through appreciating her novels, that there hides an emotional media of childhood sentiment in her novels, which has an enormous effect on Can Xue’s style of literary form and spiritual temperament to a great extent. This thesis tries to unveil the spiritual spirit of Can Xue’s novels from the four dimensions: the existing expression, forming reasons, artistic characteristics and values and meanings of her novels’childhood sentiments. The thesis is divided into four chapters in total.Chapter one, from the novel itself, we want to find out the relations between the childhood sentiments of Can Xue’s novel and her childhood experiences. Can Xue’s novels have objective descriptions of her childhood living environments and smart transformations of various sufferings in her childhood as well. The archetype of her living environment and all kinds of delicate emotional experiences all truly discloses Can Xue’s childhood sentiments. In this part, the examples are adopted as the mainly ways to propose views and expound on them in terms of various phenomena in her works and her related childhood life. We have found that her self-attention originates from her childhood, which shows as the tentativeness to relive childhood.Chapter two, through Can Xue’s biography, we can find the individual reason of the formation of her childhood sentiments. From the aspect of the individual uniqueness, what contribute to her sensitive, fragile and profound characteristics are her hereditary genes and childhood’s intermittent sad and joyful life experiences. Thus, from the perspective of literary creation, this is the root cause of the childhood sentiments of Can Xue’s novels. Besides, this chapter points out the historical background of her childhood sentiments from the exploration of the origin of childhood sentiments and the diversities of 1990s’literary and writing creation.Chapter three, this chapter summarizes the artistic style which is disclosed during her childhood sentiments’literary creation. The cause of childhood sentiments originates from the author’s skepticism and negation of the real life and the most significant embodiment is the narrative way from children’s perspectives. Because of children’s cognitive limitation, this limitation will inevitably make it difficult for readers to understand the novels’language and structure directly and clearly. So Can Xue’s novels have the tint of blurriness and obscurity, and meanwhile the strange tendency is filled with psychologies. This chapter will explain it from the narrative perspective, figure construction and language style.Chapter four emphasizes on the values and meanings of Can Xue’s novels’childhood sentiments. Can Xue’s novels are the deeper thoughts of human existence in essence, however, based on its real meanings, Can Xue’s writing shows to people the broader spiritual world and her bizarre style adds new aesthetic paradigm to literary traditions and contains profound literary connotations as well.
