Abstract


The latest English Curriculum of Secondary Education issued in 2003 by the Ministry of Education requires a course mode combining compulsory course and optional course including the teaching of English literary works at Chinese high schools. However, the teaching of literary works is in fact far from being noted in English teaching at most high schools. Language skills and testing skills for college entrance examination are still the most emphasized parts at high school English teaching. This thesis looks back on the history of the teaching of English literary works at foreign high schools and Chinese high schools, analyses the current situation of the teaching of English literary works at Chinese high schools, discusses the main problems lying in the teaching of English literary works and emphasizes the importance of the teaching of English literary works at high schools. It points out that the teaching of literary works should not be separated from language teaching and that the teaching of English literary works can help to improve students’English comprehensive ability and humanism spirits. To prove the statements, the author bases the study on Humanistic theory and theories about the relationship between language teaching, the teaching of literary works and culture teaching. A research was carried out to support the statements which consisted of a questionnaire related to English literature study at high schools and a teaching experiment period at a particular high school class in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. According to the findings of the research, the teaching of English literary works is important and necessary at high school. The teaching of English literary works can not only broaden students’literature knowledge but also improve their ability of language usage and communication to other culture. This thesis also gives suggestions on the practice of the teaching of English literary works from three different angles. The thesis finally points out the shortcomings and limitation of the research and provides advice for future research.
