Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate short-time effect of strong tea on gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) with combined esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring (MII-pH). To find if two different ways in drinking strong tea, including drinking tea immediately after meal and 2h hehind meal, can induce more gastroesophageal reflux episodes in GERD.MethordParticipants were outpatients diagnosed as GERD on gastroenterology clinic, Qilu hospital, Shandong University. All the participants were randomly divided into A group(drinking strong tea 2h behind the lunch)、B group(drinking strong tea immediately after lunch)、C group(drinking water 2h behind the lunch). The next 2h were tested as the main viewing time. Randomized self-control together with blank-control trail was applied, using combined esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring (MII-pH). Esophageal acid exposure time(percents of pH<4 and pH<2 in esophagus), gastroesophageal reflux episodes(acidic reflux episodes, weakly acidic reflux episodes, non-acid reflux episodes, fluid reflux episodes, mixed reflux episodes, total reflux episodes), distance of reflux, acid clear time(acid clear time in Z1-Z6 channel), symptoms were collected after drinking tea and without tea drinking.Result1. In A、B and C groups, within the total 24h, there was no difference among each group in all indexes:percents of pH<4 and pH<2 in esophagus, acidic reflux episodes, weakly acidic reflux episodes, non-acid reflux episodes, fluid reflux episodes, mixed reflux episodes, total reflux episodes, distance of reflux, acid clear time in Zl-Z6 channel and symptoms(P>0.05).2. The 2h viewing time after lunch compared to the 2h viewing time after breakfast in A and C group, no difference within each group was found in percents of pH<4 and pH<2 in esophagus, all types of reflux episodes, distance of reflux, acid clear time in Z1-Z6 channel, symptoms(P>0.05).3. The 2h viewing time after drinking tea in A group compared to the 2h after drinking water in C group, percents of pH<4 and pH<2 in esophagus, all types of reflux episodes, distance of reflux, acid clear time in Z1-Z6 channel, symptoms were same to each other (P>0.05).4. In group B, percents of pH<4 and pH<2 in esophagus, acidic reflux episodes, fluid reflux episodes, distance of reflux, acid clear time in Z1-Z6 channel, symptoms in the 2h viewing time after tea drinking were same to the 2h without tea drinking, but weakly acidic reflux episodes(P=0.042), non-acid reflux episodes(P<0.01), mixed reflux episodes(P=0.048), total reflux episodes(P=0.041) were higher in 2h after tea drinking.5. Divided the 2h main viewing time into four parts, each was half an hour. Compared each parts in sequence, including within-group comparision and comparision among groups, difference was not significant.ConclusionDrinking strong tea immediately after meal may give rise to more reflux, espacially non-acid reflux, together with weakly acidic reflux episodes, mixed reflux episodes, total reflux episodes, although esophageal acid esposure time, distance of reflux, acid clear time in Z1-Z6 channel and symptoms remain same. Having strong tea 2h after meal has no effect on gastroesophageal reflux in short time.
