There have been dislocations in the policies, functions, aims and contents etc. in the schooling in the countryside. They have been embodied mainly in the functions of education. The purpose of the dissertation is to analyse the orientation of the schooling in the countryside by the way of case study and in the perspective of the function of education.In the research of the function of education, there has been an obstinate tendency that researchers always seek for the universal functions of education. As people conceive, they will be fit with all schools at any time without distinction. However, in our opinion, based on different benefit and demand, different countries, social classes and groups, even individuals endue education with different functions. Therefore, there must be characteristics in the function of schooling in the countryside. It is the basic hypothesis of the dissertation.The research has been done on the base of case study. Investigation and questionnaires have been done in Huanma primary school in Cangxi County, Sichuan province. We interviewed with students, teachers, schoolmasters, peasants, and local officials. We have acquired a good understanding of the functions and characteristics of schooling in the countryside.We’ point out in the dissertation that, the government, researchers and practitioners face different pressure and demands. So, there are differences in their policies, theories and strategies of education and of the functions of education. They look at education in different perspectives and withdifferent orientation as well. In our opinion, understanding and harmonization should be fulfilled in order to build up a new system of schooling in the countryside, a kind of education that actually benefits the people and their offspring.The conclusion of the dissertation is that, in nowadays the leading function of schooling in the countryside should be stated as for the benefit of each student, for the students who will enter a higher school and still, for more students who will go back to home as peasants. Accordingly, the schooling in the countryside should be more related to the society and life in the locality.
