Abstract

Microporous-inorganic zeolites are widely applied in many kinds of fields with special crystals of framework structure. Zeolites are commonly used in catalysis and adsorbent because they are known well in physical and chemical properties. Forces which are applied in zeolites result in the change even damages of framework structure during making and using. So using efficiency is reduced and properties are changed. In addition, lubrication oil adding some zeolites can yield good results in reducing friction. Some of zeolites are showed with a negative Poisson’s ratio (auxetic property) by some researchers. It is important and useful to study the mechanical properties of zeolites in the application of zeolites in order to improve their efficiency and apply in more fields. Little study on the mechanical properties of zeolite single-crystal has been performed systematically, primarily because samples of larger size single crystal (100 μrn or larger) are difficult to be prepared. Furthermore, these single crystals are too small sizes (5mm or less) to test them by standard mechanical testing instruments. In this paper, hardness and modulus of zeolite single-crystals have been obtained by nanoindentation experiment. Their mechanical properties of zeolites have been studied systematically according to nanoindentation theory analysis and finite element simulation. Constitutive relation has been got. The relation between macro and micro mechanics has been discussed according to molecular mechanics.1 Experiment method of measuring the mechanical properties of zeolites— nanoindentation has been determined.
