Abstract


The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response is important in all-optical switching, signal processing, ultrafast optical communications and etc. To be practically useful for all-optical switching, materials should have a large nonlinear refractive index at the operating wavelength, typically at 1.3-1.6 μm, ultrafast response and relaxation times (picoseconds or less), minimal absorption loss (nonresonant nonlinearity), good environmental stability, and processability. π-Conjugated organic compounds and polymers have been investigated as a new class of third-order NLO materials. Polyacetylene, poly(phenylene vinylene), and their derivatives are typically lacking a desired processability and longterm photostability. Few organic materials reported to date offer a combination of the large nonresonant nonlinearity in the near-infrared (NIR) region, response time in picoseconds, and good film-forming properties.The NLO response of organometallic complexes can be drastically enhanced by two reasons: extended conjugated system formed by overlapping the π orbital and d orbital; electronic transition between organic ligands and central metal ions. In order to investigate the structure-property relation of organometallic complexes and to explore new optical materials for potential use, a series of complexes and ligand derivatives have been synthesized in this paper.The organic ligand is 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiole (dmit), and the central metal ions are transitional metal ions. These complexes have been studied as organic conductors and superconductors while their third-order NLO properties have been started in recent years. The changes in structure, spectral character and third-order NLO properties in the formation of complexes and the oxidation have been revealed. This research contents mainly include several parts in the following text:Part I, two organic ligand derivatives have prepared.
