Abstract


The searching for one’s belonging is always one of the favorite topics for manywriters. Even in plays and young adult literature, the theme of belonging holds animportant place. Eugene O’Neill in his play Hairy Ape expresses the theme throughYank’s pursuit of his identification, and Paul Zindel shows the loneliness of Mr.Pignatti who tries to make life meaningful by certain actions. The two writers areAmericans whose works directly reflect the loss of the selves of many Americans inthe industrialized world.The thesis attempts to analyze the theme of belonging in the two works. ThoughYank in the play is called an ape, he never accepts it and he tried to find his identity tillhe gets killed in a zoo by a real ape. Yank and the ape hold a deep relation from thebeginning of the play till its end. They are two images, but then, they are the lost unity.Eventually, none can tell what Yank is, an ape or a man. And there is the confusedPigman in The Pigman. Mr. Pignatti attempts to get connected with society bycommunication with the kids and visiting the baboon in a zoo. Mr. Pignatti tries to findhis belonging by putting his hope on two kids and a baboon, who lead him into death.Both Yank and Mr. Pignatti fail to find their belonging and the meaning of theirexistence.The thesis is composed of four parts with each one focusing on different aspect.The introduction contains some basic materials concerning about the thesis. This partintroduces the play, the novel, their writers, the main theories and other relatedinformation. Chapter one mainly analyzes the theme of belonging in The Hairy Apewith details on Yank and the real ape in the zoo and makes the comparison between thetwo within the play to show that Yank’s final fate is unavoidable. Chapter two mainlydeals with Mr. Pignatti, the pigs and the baboon. By careful analysis, the thesis findsthe symbolic meaning of the animals and the social meaning they have towards the oldman. Chapter three mainly makes the comparison between the similarities and differences of theme of belonging shown by the animals in the two works. Byemploying some theories, the thesis states that modern men can’t find their belongingin the industrialized society. The conclusion part shows that in modern society, lots ofpeople keep hopes for pursuit of their belongings, but often they suffer from failures,as the protagonists in the works.
