Abstract


The art of stone lions of Shaanxi Kangtou culture is not only an essential part of Chinese national culture, but also an indispensable section in the history of sculpture in China. With no thorough and systematical theories to follow, researches in this field did not review the unique artistic characteristics of the culture for quite a long time. Based on the differences in the spreading areas and the designs of the remains, the writer made an ordered arrangement to the historical phases according to the styles of the stone lions, conducted brief philosophical studies. By comparing and analyzing real object and picture records, referring to historical documents and image references of archaeological studies, and combining theories and research methods of artistic study, the writer generally discussed the origin of the art of stone lions of Shaanxi Kangtou culture, its style features, cultural implications and aesthetic characteristics, then evaluated its unique value in aesthetics.The characteristic view of the plastic art in China is "Da xiang wu xing", with "seeing the world from a sand" as the methodology. Developed from this core concept, the current study intended to construct the pedigree for the history of folk arts in respect of the art of stone lions of Shaanxi Kangtou culture, to explore the cultural basis, aesthetic ideas, and specific system of folk arts, to look into symbols of artistic image representing "the integration of God’s spirit and living being" in Chinese philosophy as well as the theoretical basis of typical images in abstract expressionism, so as to provide necessary historical evidence and experience for exploring and reorganizing Chinese folk arts in modern times. The current study also plays a crucial part in commenting on the significance of the art of stone lions of Shaanxi Kangtou culture in the history of Chinese fine arts, and even in the history of human culture.
