Abstract


Fuzzy language refers to the forms of language whose concepts do not have sharply defined boundaries, or the natural language that has fuzziness as its inherent property. Like precise language, fuzzy language is also a useful means of exchanging ideas, and it plays a very important role in daily communication and literature creation. Proper use of it based on the contexts not only can enhance the efficiency and veracity of communication, but also can boost up expression flexibility, and make the expression more suitable, more reasonable and more vivid. Otherwise, the inappropriate use of fuzzy language will result in misunderstanding or bring about worse consequence. From that, we can see the use of fuzzy language relies on context even more, compared with precise language. So context is a very important factor for using fuzzy language. Many scholars at home and abroad have studied fuzzy language from semantics and pragmatics, but few have studied the dependence of fuzzy language on different kinds of contexts in different social fields.This thesis tries to study context dependence of fuzzy language through revealing the relationship between fuzzy language and context and analyzing the dependence of fuzzy language on different kinds of contexts in different social fields. The analysis of relationship between fuzzy language and context will be departed into three parts. Firstly, it will analyze characteristics of fuzzy language and its dependence on context. Indeterminacy, imprecision and relativity are characteristics of fuzzy language. Context not only can specify the indeterminacy of the fuzzy language, but also can tolerate imprecision and adapt relativity of it. Secondly, it will analyze the roles of context on fuzzy language, which are interpreting and restricting. Thirdly, it will analyze pragmatic function of fuzzy language in specific context. Using fuzzy language skillfully according to the specific context will make the language more flexible, more beautiful, more efficient and more decent. A very important part of the thesis is the analysis of dependence of fuzzy language on different contexts, which are linguistic context and non-linguistic context. The dependence of fuzzy language on linguistic context will be discussed in terms of phonetic level, lexical level, grammatical level and textual level. The dependence of fuzzy language on non-linguistic context will be illustrated in terms of cultural context and situational context. According to the study, a conclusion can be drawn that in the field of literature creation, the use of fuzzy language mainly depend on linguistic context; in the field of international communication, it should depend on cultural context; and in the field of daily communication, news report and scientific forecasting, the use of fuzzy language should depend on situational context. In a word, the use of fuzzy language in different fields should depend on linguistic context and non-linguistic context.This thesis is the further study of fuzzy language based on the achievements of former study. The study has both theoretical and practical significances. Analysis of relationship between fuzzy language and context will promote the theory development of fuzzy linguistics, and the analysis of dependence of fuzzy language on different contexts in different social fields will bring practical significance for proper use of fuzzy language in usual communication to achieve successful communication.
