Abstract


Quentin Pan is renowned as an expert in sociology, eugenics, ethnology and education in modern China. He has set a good example for other scholars. He integrates many a field of knowledge to form his profound and special academic theories that are the important legacy of Chinese race. The study on humanities thoughts is the main field of his academic and teaching practice. In education, he endeavors to put the humanities thoughts he has learnt into solving the realistic problems and explores and restructures the modern education of China. It is through this way that he explores the educational significance of these humanities thoughts. And as a result his rich and unique humanities thoughts in education come into being. By a profound study of Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts in education, not only can the study of the history of Chinese present educational thoughts be broadened but also the great charm of Quentin Pan’s thoughts can be showed, and the study will be with great revelatory significance to the specific implementation of humanities education in present China.The main content of this article consists of seven parts. They are introduction, five chapters of text and conclusion.In introduction, the specific significance of studying Quentin Pan and his humanities thoughts in education is expatiated and the main achievements that former researchers have done in the study of Quentin Pan and his thoughts are tidied up and summarized. It is emphatically indicated in this part that more issues should be probed into in the existing study of Quentin Pan’s educational thoughts especially his humanities thoughts in education. And the study ideas and its innovation of this paper are also put forward in this part.The text can be divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, introduction and comments are made on Quentin Pan’s life, education and changes in his scholarly thoughts. On the basis of Quentin Pan’s major education course (including education and teaching course), the specific spatio-temporal background of Chinese modern education is analyzed and it is mainly about the historic situation in which Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts in education are put forward trying to show the education ideas and the tenor of the life of Chinese modern scholarly intellectuals through the form of case study.The chapters from the second to the fifth mainly touch upon Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts in education from the views of his social thoughts and the specific and scientific angles. According to the author, the thoughts mainly contain four parts. They are as follows: 1) As to the past and the future generations, Quentin Pan stressed thoughts in eugenic education, which deal with eugenics, combination of eugenics and education, new mothers’ education, spread of sex education, etc. 2) As to himself, he explained his free educational thoughts, which include the basic connotation of freedom and free education, the idea of expertise superior to proficiency in college education and modification of technical education, combination of free education and vocational education, unification of free education and democracy, etc. 3) As to coevals, he formed his thoughts of moral education, which involve the theoretical basis of this thought, character education of "unification" maintaining gregarious lifestyle, mother love, education for children under motherhood. 4) As to the bodies except human beings, he formed social adjustment, this educational thought contains education from the beginning to the end, education on the study abroad, the thought of humanities to be prosperous after the survey of science and industrialization. These chapters are the main part of this thesis. Not only is the specific items in his educational thoughts emphasized, but also comments are made on his great contribution and hereby Quentin Pan’s inheriting and exceeding to Chinese modern education is narrated under his social thoughts and subject visual threshold. And an absolute position has been clearly made to Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts education in the history of Chinese modern education and thoughts, especially in the history of humanities education and humanities thoughts en education.In conclusion, simple narration is made to Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts in education. It clearly defines the inner logic and dissertation system of Quentin Pan’s humanities thoughts in education and confirms his theme being clear but not fragmentized and rambling. This for the second time clarifies the great historic contribution Quentin Pan made to Chinese modern education and the practical revelation to humanities education in present China.
