At present, the basic education curricular reform in our country calls for co-operative learning through Task-based language teaching approach. As we all know, this approach has been put forward at the beginning of the 1980’s and has won great popularity among English teachers or researchers in China for many years. Since then, TBLT is implemented in different areas of the classroom teaching in China. Some of them have made great contributions to TBLT and arrived at a series of conclusions related to TBLT. It should also be noted that grammar is viewed as the tricky problem by many teachers and students consistently, especially for middle school students. Based on what they have done and the confronted problem, this study was conducted from February, 2010 to January, 2011 to explore how to apply TBLT to English grammar teaching in Liyuantun, No.2 Middle School which is a rural school and to present some specific sample examples of grammar teaching. At the same time, compared with the traditional 3P method, the effectiveness of TBLT to English grammar teaching in this school has also been examined. This paper begins with a brief review of various teaching approaches to grammar teaching and the current situation of grammar teaching. After that, the related issues about TBLT which include the origin, theoretical basis, characteristics and principles of TBLT are also been presented. Furthermore, the strategies and previous views of grammar teaching in the framework of TBLT are reviewed at the same time. And then, the author makes the experiment in order to find the answer to research questions. Before the experiment, the questionnaires and interviews between the teachers and the students are conducted to get their general information about TBLT and their attitudes towards grammar. And the subjects in this experiment are 75 students from two classes in Grade Seven, and the experiment lasts for one year. Firstly, the author chooses the original scores as the results of the pre-test and finds that the examination results in the two classes are similar to each other. Then the author views the two classes as the control class and the experimental class respectively. The results are mainly concluded by analyzing two tests’scores which was obtained at the end of Grade Seven and after the first term of Grade Eight. Through the comparison of the mean and standard deviation between the control class and the experimental class, the effectiveness of the task-based grammar teaching in the immediate post-test and delayed post-test can be seen clearly. What is more, through the classroom observation between the experimental class and the control class, it is obvious to see that the classroom atmosphere between the two classes is totally different. In the experimental class, the students are more active, brave and open-minded than those in the control class and the listening and speaking abilities in the experimental class are much higher than those in the experimental class. Also, the students in the experimental class are full of cooperative spirit and tend to be helpful. In a word, All these phenomena indicate that teaching English grammar in the framework of TBLT can greatly improve the teaching effect, fully arouse students’enthusiasm for learning grammar, and as a result, the English level of the students can be improved greatly on the whole. However, the author also finds that grammar teaching in the framework of TBLT also has its disadvantages. For example, it is not so easily managed, and sometimes the task activities may be time-consuming. Therefore, it has to be carefully planned and organized by the teachers. In the concluding remarks, the author not only arrives at the conclusion of the study, but also points out the limitations of the study and the prospects to the further study.
