Abstract


Nylon is a kind of thermoplastics engineering plastics used widely at home and abroad. It has good abrasion resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, oil resistance and other excellent properties, but the relatively low impact strength restricts it to use in some fields. The super-toughness material can be prepared by reactive blending nylon with functional elastomers (usually maleic anhydride functionalized elastomer). But the optimal compositions of super-toughness nylon are often acquired based on orthogonal design method, considering various factors and making a lot of orthogonal experiment. How to use a simple experimental method and determine effectively the optimal compositions of super-toughness nylon is an important and considerable problem. This study try to establish the corresponding relationship between the key mechanical parameters and characteristic rheological parameters through investigating the effects of elastomer types, concentration, the graft ratio on dynamic rheological behavior and mechanical properties of the double number nylon/functional elastomer reactive blends. We have prepared three types nylonl212/POE-g-MAH, nylon1212/EPDM-g-MAH and nylon1212/SEBS-g-MAH blends and investigated their mechanical, rheological behaviors and morphologies.The results could be summarized as follows:(1) With the addition of functional elastomer, the impact strength of blends increased greatly. The highest notched Izod impact strength of blends attained to90kJ/m2.(2) The reactive blends exhibited the liquid-solid transitions with the increase of functional elastomer content. G’curves of blends showed obvious "second plateau" in the low frequency region.(3) The blends of nylon1212/POE-g-MAH and nylon1212/EPDM-g-MAH showed one "gel point" within the concentration investigated, and the blends corresponding to gel point show the highest Izod impact strength. The "gel point" acquired from dynamic rheological data and "super-toughness point" of mechanical properties had the corresponding relationship. The special "network" morphology was observed at gel point. (4) The blends of nylon1212/SEBS-g-MAH showed two "gel point" within the concentration investigated, and the blends corresponding to the first gel point didn’t show the highest Izod impact strength. The similar special "network" morphology was still observed at this gel point.
