Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluated the quality of drinking water and major factors which affect on water quality in rural areas of Luoyang city. Meanwhile, the drinking water safety status was evaluated based on the incidence of notifiable intestinal infectious diseases from2009to2011in these areas. It will provide the scientific basis for the relevant decision-making departments to develop a series of scientific and effective measures for disease control and prevention.MethodsThe centralized water supply monitoring sites which water supply was more than20tons per day were selected from9counties including downtown areas in Luoyang city using stratified random sampling method. Water samples were collected in the dry season and the wet season respectively. The evaluation indexes include water quality sensory properties, general chemical indexes, toxicological indexes, and bacteriological indexes. SPSS12.0statistical software was used to analyze the population, time and reginal distribution of intestinal infectious diseases as well as the hecorrelation between eligible rate of drinking water and the incidence of intestinal infectious diseases from2009to2011in9counties of Luoyang.Results1. The main water source of centralized water supply in rural areas of Luoyang city is from deep wells, accounting for56.79%. Only22water sites (accounted for9.05%) are fully processed, the remaining water sites are just treated with precipitation and filtration or disinfection partially. According to the result of water sample detection from243rural drinking water safety-monitoring sites in both wet season and dry season, the qualified rate is from23.00%to86.45%. The drinking water sensory traits indexes of smell and taste met the standard. Chrominance, chlorides and arsenic also did not exceed national standard. However, the total coliforms levels in drinking water showed exceeding the national standard in the investigated counties excluding Mengjin and Ruyang2. The incidence of intestinal infectious diseases in9counties of Luoyang city showed declining trend from2009to2011. In Mengjin, Xinan, Luanchuan, Song, Ruyang, Yiyang and Yanshi the incidence showed an upward trend which reached to the highest peak in2011. The incidence rate showed a fluctuating trend in Yichuan from2009to2011.The high incidence age group of intestinal infectious diseases was from0to5years old. Scattered children and farmers were the prominent population.3. There is no statistically significant correlation between the qualified rate of drinking water and the incidence of intestinal infectious diseases in9counties of Luoyang from2009to2011.Conclusions1. In9counties of Luoyang city, the main hygiene of drinking water is the general chemical indexes of total hardness, sulfate, soluble total solid and iron levels exceeded standard. The fluoride and nitrate concenttation of toxicological indexes were exceeded standard. The microbiological indexes of total coliform group, total bacteria count, heat-resistant coliform bacteria exceeded standard. Only a few counties have the serious problems of visible matter in drinking water.2. The high incidence age group of intestinal infectious diseases was from0to5years old, scattered children and farmers in the investigated areas of Luoyang city. Efforts should be strengthened in the prevention and control of intestinal infectious diseases especially within the group from0to5years old, scattered children and farmers.
