Photodecoloration of Azo Dyes with Acetylacetone as a Potent Activator

The treatment of wastewaters containing azo dyes has received increasing attention in recent years. However, the main difficulty in the improvement of color removal and biodegradability along with high operating costs limits the application of the existing photochemical treatment. Therefore, it is an urge to find a novel method which is of both high-efficiency and low energy consumption.Here, we report a new method, UV irradiation with acetylacetone (UV/AcAc), for decolorization of azo dyes. The feasibility of this process was tested by studying the decoloration of two azo dyes, Orange Ⅱ and Methyl Orange. Comparing with other photochemical processes, we found that under the identical light and dose conditions, the decoloration efficiency of the UV/AcAc process was much higher. Homogeneous reaction also made it simple to operation and no mass transfer limitations associated with gases or catalysts. In terms of kinetics, a self-acceleration phenomenon was observed. The significantly improved biodegradability of solutions after irradiation showed its potential use as a pretreatment step in sequential chemical-biological water treatment.The effects of reaction conditions, such as initial azo dyestuff concentration, the dosage of AcAc, initial pH, and light resources, were studied by measuring color removal. What’s more, the mechanism was explored by identifying the intermediates, the results showed that the degradation route of azo dyes by the UV/AcAc process mainly based on the breakage of the-N=N-chromophore group.
