Abstract

Chinese road traffic accident statistics from2005to2007show that, theincidence of frontal crash is27%, it is the second largest accident type, the death tollof frontal crash account for29%of all deaths, this rate is the highest in all accidenttypes. According to the statistics of NHTSA, in America, the co-driver deaths inpassenger car accident account for19%of passenger car all occupant deaths in2008.A lot of practices show that good car occupant protection system design candramatically reduce occupant hurt degree and mortality. Therefore, optimizationresearch of co-driver restraint systems in frontal crash is very necessary.A passenger car which is independent research and development was the researchobject of this paper. The modeling parameters were obtained from the vehicle crashexperiment. The finite element simulation model of co-driver frontal impact wasestablished and validated with LS-DYNA and HYPERMESH. The restraint system offinite element model was optimized using surrogate model method. The optimizationresults show that, when the triggering time is10ms, the vent area is2461mm2and thegas flow rate is original value, the minimum WIC could be obtained. The multi-rigid-body simulation model of co-driver in frontal impact wasdeveloped and validated with MADYMO.The dummy injury indexs and dynamicresponse characteristics curve of multi-rigid-body simulation model were comparedwith the compute results of finite element model. The compare results show that, themaximum error of WIC is7.24%, minimum error is0.07%. The maximum error ofHIC is10.5%, minimum error is0.27%. The maximum error of C3msis-7.73%,minimum error is0.27%. The maximum error of Ccompis8.19%, minimum error is-1.1%.
