Abstract


Dai Temple, located in the south of Mount Tai, is the mansion of Mount Tai God, and the ancestor temple to all East Mountain Temples all over China. Furthermore, it is the site for ancient emperors of all dynasties to apotheosize, and worship to heaven and earth. As the dominant palace of Dai Temple, Tiankuang Palace is the representative of palace architecture in Chian, and thus honored as one of the Three Most Important Palaces in Ancient China. The color painting and fresco arts manifested in the palace are essential parts of ancient architecture decoration arts associated with Mount Tai. Therefore, research on architecture decoration arts of Tiankuang Palace will offer reference to that on ancient architecture decoration arts of Mount Tai.History and decoration arts style of the palace are studied through with reference to materials on the color painting, fresco and religion of Dai Temple, and those on ancient architecture in China as well. The author has been to Tiankuang Palace many times for on-the-spot inspection by measuring and taking photographs, and thus collected reliable materials about architecture and decoration of the Palace. Comparative and analytic approaches are applied to integrate the materials selected from books and those collected on the site by the author, so as to provide systematic elaboration and analysis on the architecture decoration arts in Tiankuang Palace. First, the development history, architecture forms, and elements influencing architecture decoration are given detailed description; second, special focus is put on the interpretation of the architecture color painting and fresco art of the Palace; third, by virtue of comparison, the similarities and differences of color painting decoration of the exterior eaves in Taihe Palace, Dacheng Palace and Tiankuang Palace are elaborated.Decoration art of Tiankuang Palace is an excellent model not only to architecture decoration art of Mount Tai. but also to that of ancient palaces in China. The research on architecture decoration of Tiankuang Palace serves as a guide to further exploration of the religious and architectural cultures associated with Mount Tai, and provides reference for the research on the decoration arts, like color painting and fresco, of ancient architectures in Dai Temple and Mount Tai as well.
