Abstract
|
Ground-supported steel silo is a vertical storage container that is commonly used to store mineral, grain, cement and other loose materials. Compared with reinforced concrete silos, it has variety advantages such as low cost, short construction period, good heat dissipation.Steel silo has a very complicated mechanical behavior and failure criteria as a thin-walled shell structure. In China, most steel silos are rolled or assembled with thin-walled steel sheets and usually have a large radius-thickness ratio and poor stability, which may lead to silos’collapse. Therefore, it is necessary to design the silos rigorously based on the recommendations of codes and specifications to ensure the safety during their service life. However, because of the challenging in analyzing the thin-walled shell structure, the limit of relative codes, the complicated design elements, and the inadequate application scope, there is a certain gap between the codes and design requirements in practice. Several national and international computer programs are available to design ground-supported steel silos, but most of them have disadvantages, such as, complicated operation procedures, required certain theoretical basis and time-consuming.This study describes the calculation theory and provides a comprehensive, accurate and efficient method to design groud-supported steel silos. In addition, a computer program for designing ground-supported steel silos is developed based on Visual Basic (VB) language under Windows platform. Finally, the accuracy of the program is validated by compareing the calculation results from the program with those obtained from the finite element analysis. The program is approved to be a practical way to design ground-supported steel silos. It is simple, practical and easily performed by structure engineers.
