Objective:To determine the efficacy, tolerance and safety of low-dose polyethylenle glycol combined with single serving standard do个se of magnesium sulfate compared with polyethylene glycol in bowel preparation. Methods:From May 2010 to May 2011,180 patients referred for colonoscopy were prospectively randomized into three groups. Group A (n=60) received regular doses (2 pack) polyethylene glycol before colonoscopy; Group B(n=60)received low dose (1 packet) polyethylene glycol combined with magnesium sulfate (25%,60ml); while Group C(n=60)received low-dose (1 packet)polyethylene taken separately magnesium sulfate (25%,60ml) in bowel cleansing preparation. The quality of preparation was assessed by the endoscopist who was blinded to the type of the colon cleansing and bubble situation. The blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) of every patient were monitored, laboratory examinations including serum calcium, phosphorus, serum magnesium, hematocrit, electrolytes and renal function indicators were performed before and after the preparation. A questionnaire was used to assess side effects and patients tolerance to the regimen. Results:Three groups completed the study. The baseline parameters of sex, age, weight, endoscopic diagnosis or constipation were no significant difference in three groups. Higher defecation frequency in group C had more significant difference than in B、C groups (P=0.0044). B、C had no significant difference (P>0.05). B、C groups had better quality of colon preparation than group A (P=0.0001), the two groups B、C had no significant difference (P>0.05). Compare the three components in the bowel, the cleanness of bowel preparation in left colon group B was better than group C (P<0.05), both groups were better than group A (P= 0.0001), In the middle colon group B and group C had no difference, but two groups were better than group A (P =0.0002); In the right colon, group C and group A were better than group B (P<0.05), A、C groups had no statistical difference (P>0.05). Group B had less intestinal bubble (0.12±0.32 vs.0.75±0.57,0.65±0.8, P=0.0001), There were no significant difference in A、C groups(P>0.05). B、C group had less time in examination than in group A (7.42±2.38,7.87±1.58 vs.9.2±5.05 (P=0.0001). The three groups of patients taking the drug completely taste and drug rate B, C groups were superior than group A、B、C groups had no significant difference. Service rate of drug re-B、C groups were superior than group A(P=0.0002), B、C groups had no significant difference. There had no generally appropriate in three groups Conclusion:For patients with bowel preparation, low dose (1 packet) polyethylene glycol combined with magnesium sulfate is more tolerated and safe than a standard polyethylene glycol regimen and provides better quality of preparation of the bowel for colonoscopy. Especially low-dose polyethylene glycol bowel combined with magnesium sulfate is more effective.
