Abstract

English reading learning is a long and complex process, because there exist many factors that may influence the outcome of English reading learning. The degree of tolerance of ambiguity (TA) is one of the factors. As tolerance of ambiguity is an important aspect of individual differences, it is becoming highly valued. However, research on the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and English journalistic discourse reading is rare. The present study is an attempt to explore the correlation between TA and English journalistic discourse reading learning, in hopes that this thesis will be useful for English journalistic reading teaching. This study is conducted to answer the following four questions:(1)What is the current tendency of Chinese journalism majors’tolerance of ambiguity level?(2)Does there exist a significant correlation between Chinese Journalism majors’ tolerance of ambiguity level and their reading achievements on English journalism discourses reading?(3)What’s the different performance between higher and lower TA degree of Chinese Journalism majors in the use of English reading strategies?(4)Does there exist any significant effects of the tolerance of ambiguity, use of English reading strategies on the performances of English journalistic discourse reading? In order to find the answers to these questions, the present study selects two questionnaires and a test to conduct the research. The subjects are 127 male and female second-year Chinese journalism majors in Shandong University of Political Science and Law. In the study, Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity Scale(SLTAS) is employed to measure the subjects’degree of TA, Reading Strategies Questionnaire is employed to measure the subjects’use of reading strategies and the test is employed to obtain the subjects’achievements on English journalistic reading. The data are analyzed and the results suggest that:(1) There is the statistically significant difference of tolerance of ambiguity level among Chinese journalism majors. The TA level of the majorities stays at the moderate level. (2) There exists a positive correlation between Chinese Journalism majors’tolerance of ambiguity level and their reading achievements on English journalistic discourse reading. (3) Students with high level of TA in English journalistic discourse reading are likely to use more reading strategies than those with low level of TA. (4) Tolerance of ambiguity and the use of reading strategies are the two important factors which influence on the performances of English journalistic discourse reading. The present study provides us with some revelatory insights into the theoretical and practical issues of English journalistic reading learning. The present study provides empirical supports to relevant theories. The findings of the study prove that there exist some correlation between TA and English journalistic reading learning, which reminds the language teachers should take TA into consideration in the future studies. In addition, the results from the present study offer several practical implications. On the one hand, the study provides the practical evidence for the journalistic English teaching. On the other hand, at the end of the research, some useful suggestions are provided for teachers concerned how to train learners’tolerance of ambiguity, in the hope that these suggestions can be of value and references to the English teaching.
