Abstract


On July6,2012, the British playwright John Osborne’s renowned play Look Backin Anger was put on the stage of the Duke of York’s Theatre in London, while not longbefore, it was performed at Broadway and the Laura Pels Theatre in New York. Thisworld tour has received a worldwide acclaim. After more than half a century, Look Backin Anger is still regarded as a repertoire on the international stage, illustrating its literaryvalue and strong vitality.Since the premiere of1956, Look Back in Anger, as a milestone of British drama inthe20thcentury, has drawn a number of heated responses on which western scholars andcritics show constant interest. However, this play is relatively less known in China. Forthis reason, this thesis tries to analyze its literary value from the perspective of the gamespirit, and further discuss its influences and contributions to the British drama andculture, in order to arouse more domestic concerns on this play.Researches both at home and abroad on Look Back in Anger mainly focus ondramatic writing techniques, psycho-analysis, discourse analysis, realism, feminism,new historicism and drama aesthetics, most of which are based on the social，political,economic and cultural background in a macroscopic view. This thesis attempts to studythe little games among the main characters through the game spirit theories: first of all,the game spirit is externalized in the game scenes and characterizations; furthermore,this thesis discusses Osborne’s game spirit integrated in the composing philosophywhen he produced this play, including the setting arrangement and innovative writingtechniques; finally, main focus is on Osborne’s inheritance and development of thegame spirit rooted in British and the whole western literature and culture. The objectiveis to elaborate the main characters’ motives of playing little games in their daily life,reveal practical problems faced by the post-war generation in the specific historicalcontext, discuss the play’s contributions to British literature and culture, and furtherseek its influence and inspiration on contemporary people.This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter I is a general introduction of the game spirit theories, including the origin and development of the game sprit theories;Huizinga’s theory in particular, which is mainly applied in this thesis; and theconnection of the game spirit and Look Back in Anger. Chapter II discusses gamepresentations and the main characters’ game spirits reflected in the play. Analyses aregiven to game scenes exclusively, such as the features and functions of the game scenesand the game images. The second part of Chapter II dissects the game spirit reflected onthe main characters and how it forms. Chapter III studies the game spirit’s influences onJohn Osborne’s composing philosophy when he composed Look Back in Anger.Osborne’s unique language style and talented skills of reining words illustrate hisunconventional mind, adventurous spirit and innovative thought, which are reflectionsof the game spirit. In Chapter IV, the focus is on the inheritance and development of thegame spirit from a cultural level. As the decay of the game spirit in the modem Britainand the western world, Osborne summons a return of game spirit through Look Back inAnger, and further promotes a new cultural and social reform, making a significantcontribution to the contemporary Britain.This thesis attempts to discuss the influences and glamour of Look Back in Anger,hoping that there will be more studies and researches on it, in order to enrich the studieson this play and introduce more people to enjoy the outstanding play.
