Abstract


The study of Hemingway has always been an important subject of both domestic andforeign reviews. The critics most focused on "The Lost Generation","Tough-guy Image" and"The Iceberg Theory" besides the perspectives of Existentialism and Symbolism. Yet NickAdams——a character recurring in Hemingway’s short stories——has not gotten muchattention that he deserves, the systematic review and in-depth study of this image seriesespecially need further excavation.This paper strives to systematically arrange the image fragments that scattered in theshort stories of Hemingway and rearrange them on the basis of the timeline of Nick Adams’Experiences. Summarizing the stories in three collections of short stories——"In OurTime","Men Without Women" and "Winner Take Nothing" along with other unpublishedpieces, mainly through text reading, this paper tries to show the image of Nick Adams fromchildhood, youth to prime systematically and comprehensively, to show the particularcharacter of Nick Adams and the cause of it by analyzing his growth process andpsychological changes.After combing the image of Nick Adams, the author discovered that Nick Adams fitscertain particular experience and nature of Hemingway, this illustrates that Nick Adams canbe identify as a literary autobiography of Hemingway. Furthermore, the specific features ofNick Adams reflect on the heroes of Hemingway’s novels of later period. The significance ofthis image can be seen clearly.The growth of Nick Adams also vividly reflects the collective and basic identity of the"Nick Style" characters from that time——the "Lost" temperament and the "Tough-guy"spirit. Through Nick, Hemingway systematically illustrated a rendering progress of the typicalfeatures of his characters in the later works, the changing from growth and spiritualexperience of Nick is the changing of not only Hemingway but also his identical characters.Nick Adams is without any doubt an original, fundamental and summary image ofHemingway’s character creation. The "Lost" depression of Nick reflects a transcendent ofboth Hemingway and the figures from his later works. The "Tough-guy" spirit of Nick is sureto be an important basis for that of Hemingway’s works. As a personality, the primitive andregression tendency to origin of Nick Adams is an important aspect that cannot be ignored ofHemingway’s "Tough-guy Image".In summary, the image of Nick Adams plays an irreplaceable role in Hemingway’s entirecreative career. He is not only the foundation of later successful image creations ofHemingway, but also the soul of all those eternal characters.
